Gopalan Nair & the idiot child who cried wolf

There is a storm brewing in a tea cup – check this out: TOC Editorial: Gopalan Nair’s despicable hoax – why is the online community so indignant? Come on lah, it’s just a big joke right?

According to many (who I suspect are Gopalan Nair’s sidekicks) this hoax has everything to do with LKY, PAP and even the broader philosophical question of how two wrongs make a right – here’s a better explanation: this has nothing whatsoever to do with whether you, I or your cat likes or doesn’t like PAP or whether we all believe the sun rises from the ass of LKY – to attempt to link Mr Nair cry wolf to any issue regarding politics; is simply a cheap attempt to politicize this matter with smoke and mirrors inorder to pull the wool over your eyes.

There is only one point on the table and it is simply this – Mr Nair has committed an act that goes against the grain of the internet community – the internet may very well be the wild west; it may even be a feral and brutish place –  but is it conceivable even in this primordial soup; the internet may have already managed to flesh out certain baseline expectations in the form of conventions and even social rules that we are all feel the need to buy into or at least pretend too (presumably for the common good.) I will not go as far as to term this as solidarity or even a formal agreement.

But it is fair to say it can’t be so different from a wispy affirmation of how we all wish to see the internet and how you or I wish to see ourselves standing in this virtual chessboard – how did this rule come about? I don’t know. But I suspect it cannot be so different from how one feels the need to take off one’s shoes before entering another’s house, only because the act speaks the length of a sentence – all I know is things just don’t come about and they certainly don’t decide to stay for good for no apparent reason –  that could well be the same reason why if someone doesn’t feel the need to offer his seat to a pregnant lady or the old most of us feel a collective sense of revulsion in the MRT or we all see a man beating up a defenceless girl, most of us would just give him a Kung Fu kick (though in my case I rather walk away quickly and not make eye contact), like I said, it just goes against the grain – similarly, all I know is what Mr G.Nair did doesn’t feel right and I suspect many others share this same feeling – that’s the only thing that matters; the rest you can just as well throw out.

If Mr Nair believes he has every right to cry wolf in the name of past injustices committed against him and his colleagues or why he can’t seem to get his waistline down to happy size 34.

Then he must also accept the reality many here may not agree with him the internet should have been the chosen platform for him to vent out his frustration in the manner he did – by all means give the system a good kick and if possible even try to bash in the door – but do it fairly and squarely – if you cry wolf then what does that really make you in the greater scheme of things? Could it be that you are no better than those who once judged and ostracized you?  Or perhaps you may even be worse? Yes, no…maybe? That I shall leave to the preceptive reader to conclude.

My gut feel tells me Mr Nair (and I suspect his gang) still doesn’t get it. Neither does he seem to even understand why most netizens feel a sense of genuine indignation about him crying wolf. Nor can he possibly understand why this has very little to do with LKY or even the PAP ; or what once transpired between him and them; or whether good or evil should win – but rather this has everything to do slighting the very people who once gave G.Nair the benefit of a level playing field, good light and freedom to say whatever was in his mind – and instead of cherishing this privilege; he just threw it all away on a childish caper – tell me my fellow netizen’s did he respect either you or me? Did he even once pause and consider the broader implications of what his actions might have had on the internet? Did he even bother to put himself in your shoes or mine?

I really don’t think so – that unfortunately is the failing common to those who see no wrong in crying wolf.

People used to say when the internet was a child it was like the wild west; this I agree completely; as a man who could no more go about his business peacefully without togging along a plasma gun to keep at bay brigands and troublemakers; but these days things has improved; it is more like the Sicilian hills, especially in the gaming scene; of course there is room for improvement; but some semblance of order is definitely emerging; but as I said, this all depends on a rough appreciation of the idea of COMMUNITY; why is this idea so difficult to understand?

We once wrote for the TR; whether we like it or not; we once drew water from the same well; so we considered them as our extended family; let me ask you all a question; in a Sicilian village, when a child tends to sheep somewhere in the hills cries “wolf’ – does the father say, “deal with it my son, that is your problem!” Or does he tell the signore please ring your bell; so that the men will go up there with their Lupara’s to put to sleep this menace?

And what happens when all these men; who have all put down their scythes and flails only to pick up their Lupara’s turn the hills inside out to find nothing?

And this did not happen once or twice or even thrice my brothers; we were all called to the hills to search and put to sleep this imaginary wolf more times than I can remember and we even called our friends to help us and they came in good faith, as we are a COMMUNITY. ( I swear to all of you; we put up a cordon of steel and fire; nothing could have got through without us trailimg bacl to the wolf’s liar and killing it! – but what happened…nothing…no wolf came….now the trust is gone. kaput, finito -that the reason why we have to pull out, all I need is one good reason and here you have it! Right or wrong, this is what we will do!)

This is what happens when you say there is a DOS attack; we know it to be a very serious thing in the way – we even have a word for it, the thing sinister – it is not so different from an idiot ringing up the police station and lying to them there is a bomb somewhere in Orchard; he thinks it is a big joke; but how can that be so: people are called into action; store keepers close their shutters and the streets are empty – it is bad for business.

All I can say is this; I do not know how this will all end; but I know how it will begin if we were all in a Sicillian village; storekeepers will all draw their blinds; the womenfolk will close their doors and bring their young ones in; no one will talk about this; they will not even discuss it openly; they will just pretend as if it is business as usual; it is another day.

Somewhere in the Sicilian hills the men who once searched for this non-existent wolf will go about the unpleasant business of silencing the lambs of this village idiot – after that, it is matter of profound indifference to the COMMUNITY whether this boy cries wolf or not – life it seems just goes right on and everything is as it should be.

Now you understand why no one talks about this matter as for Wong Kan Seng, he can do nothing except look up at the Curellean sky and say, life beautiful.
