It’s business.
————————————————————
‘I don’t think I am a very good businessman – well not in the traditional book sense at least. As I seem to have this habit of spending an awful lot of time just thinking what I just heard, said or what it may all finally add up too.
If you try to get me to commit it’s usually a frustrating enterprise. Doesn’t even matter how good the deal is or whether it wouldn’t be on the table when we next meet…it’s futile.
As I will probably say in a neutral tone bordering on disinterest – give me a few days and I will come back to you. I need some time make adjustments and consider whether it can all fit nicely into my future plans. After that I will think, think and think. Usually I do my best thinking when I am in the field. I think when I am walking, cycling or just working with my farmhands – there is no specific line of thought – it’s like watching a movie again and again with no specific intent in mind. That I think can irritate some people. Or maybe send out the wrong message. As for others I can imagine it would probably take on a much more sinister appearance as usually in business it’s considered macho to be decisive and quick footed….but I am the direct opposite. My intent is usually dark and frequently inscrutable and it’s virtually impossible to predict where I am likely to plonk my chips.
I think, think and think. That could be one reason why I make less impulsive decisions than most people in business. Neither do I ever commit myself to do something only to find out later that I have taken on more than I can handle.
I guess you can say, I am slow…..very slow in my way of doing business. But that’s the way I like it and it’s served me very well.’
