Durian Winds
June 14, 2025
In 1415, Admiral Zheng He who commanded the third Emperor Yong Le treasure fleet noted in his log while sailing thru the Straits,
‘The Winds blow from all directions this time of the year. One moment it is from the East, then suddenly a strong gust forces our sails to the West and just when the men are ready to settle down, it (the wind) turns suddenly to the North……’
If you observe carefully the winds come from all directions this time of the year, there is no firm direction to speak of and it seems as if they are here and everywhere at the same time….when this type of winds blow, farmers refer to them as Durian winds. As it presages the flowering season of Durian trees.
